SiteGround offers three tiers designed to support up to an average of 400,000 page views per month. Once you exceed that amount, you’ll need a more robust plan.
How SiteGround and HostGator Stack Up
The lowest price you’ll pay for SiteGround per month is $2.99 and $2.75 per month for HostGator. However, those prices are discounted rates only provided during your first term and reflect rates based on an annual purchase paid in advance. HostGator gives the most significant discount on its 36-month contract, whereas SiteGround’s best price per month is based on a 12-month contract. Both plans have regular, higher pricing on subsequent invoices.
None of these web hosts offer free hosting, but there is a money-back guarantee should you not like the service. SiteGround’s guarantee period is 30 days, and HostGator’s is 45 days.
Each host provides free, unlimited email accounts that you can access from anywhere with an internet connection. You’ll find both hosts have good reviews, with some caveats. Several of HostGator’s reviews mentioned how their sites were hacked without detection or notification from the host at all, despite it touting security features to prevent this. SiteGround’s negative reviews centered around lengthy wait times for support and no support access via phone whatsoever.
SiteGround provides 10 GB of storage with its base plan, whereas HostGator’s storage is 50 GB. The maximum storage on SiteGround’s plans is 40 GB, whereas HostGator has unlimited storage with its plans. SiteGround is slightly faster than HostGator, thanks to its free content delivery network (CDN).
SiteGround offers either shared hosting or a dedicated server, but nothing in between. If you need a virtual private server (VPS), consider HostGator instead. Want to run multiple sites under one account? You can with the right package from either web host. Their only stipulation is that it is for usual and customary usage for a small operation (meaning you probably can’t mine crypto with it).
HostGator doesn’t call out e-commerce features specifically on its sales page, although it provides many blog posts about why they’re perfect for e-commerce sites. SiteGround calls out that it offers free installation of WooCommerce, a shopping cart plugin for WordPress.
Another notable feature of SiteGround is its data center that matches 100% of the energy it consumes to be carbon neutral. Some blogs state HostGator offsets 130% of its carbon footprint, but its website or knowledge base does not display anything about carbon offsets whatsoever.
